In 1958, the General Development Corporation purchased the land of 40,000 acres and River Park development along the North Fork of Saint Lucie River. In 1959, the General Development Corporation established its first bridge over the Saint Lucie River, providing automobiles with the direct access to Port Saint Lucie. In compliance with the request made by GDC to the state legislature, 70 miles were incorporated in Port Saint Lucie. It attained the stature of a city on April 27, 1961, as a effect of House Bill No. 953. The bill was proposed by Rupert Smith, the State Representative, and it was approved by C. Farris Bryant, the Florida Governor. As a result of the establishment of business sectors and entertainment & recreational spots by Core Communities, the city witnessed a remarkable boom and there was a flood of job opportunities during the early 2000s.
